Description

Styrodur XPS

Styrodur XPS is rigid extruded polystyrene insulation. Its combination of low thermal conductivity, low water absorption and compressive strength makes it suitable for parts of a building exposed to moisture or loads. Typical applications include foundations, basement walls, floors and certain flat roof assemblies. In these locations the insulation has to limit heat loss under more demanding conditions than on a dry internal wall.

Insulation for demanding conditions

The closed-cell structure limits water uptake. A correctly specified XPS board can therefore retain its thermal performance where it is exposed to moisture and freeze–thaw cycles. This matters in parts of a building in contact with the ground. Insulating basement walls and floor junctions helps keep these areas warmer and reduces the building’s heat loss.

XPS boards are available in different strength grades to suit different design loads. They are light, easy to cut and straightforward to lay. Some boards have profiled edges to help keep the insulation continuous. Their rigidity helps installers form a level layer, both on large projects and when renovating a home.

Foundations, floors and flat roofs

XPS can insulate foundations, basement walls, ground-bearing floors and floors subject to loads. Selected grades are suitable for inverted roofs, where the insulation sits above the waterproofing. XPS may also be specified for plinths and other junctions. Choose a board suitable for the application as well as the required thickness.

Consider moisture exposure, the fixing method and the long-term design load. XPS does not replace waterproofing. Use adhesives and associated materials compatible with polystyrene and provide suitable surface protection. SteelProfil can help compare thicknesses and grades for a foundation, roof or floor so that the insulation delivers the intended long-term performance.

Plan the order of work, particularly where foundations will be backfilled. Close-fitting boards and carefully formed corners help maintain continuity. It is much easier to correct gaps before these areas become inaccessible.

XPS insulation prices and availability

We supply XPS and other insulation materials. Selected lots are available from stock, which can help both when planning a project and when a few packs are needed at short notice. Our range also includes first- and second-grade offers on insulation products. When considering a second-grade offer, check the actual condition, tolerances and intended use. Contact SteelProfil for current availability and help calculating the quantity for your project.
